JULY Historical re-enactment of the Camp de Boulogne, with more than 2,500 re-enactors

For two years, from 1803 to 1805, Napoleon methodically planned and organised his attempt to invade England, starting from the port of Boulogne-sur-mer. One of the best-known events at this military camp was the distribution of the first crosses of the Légion d'Honneur, which took place on 16 August, 1804, in front of more than 100,000 soldiers.

Every year, the Association Napoléonienne du Boulonnais organises a historical re-enactment of the Camp de Boulogne, including re-enactments of bivouacs, battles and concerts with thousands of re-enactors from Britain, Austria, Spain, Moscow, Belgium and Corsica all in period dress.

The re-enactment will take place on 3 and 4 July on two 9-hectare areas set around the Colonne de la Grande Armée.

OCTOBER 04 - JANUARY 05 Exhibition: Images of the coronation of the Emperor Napoleon

In March 1814 the Chalcographie Impériale, today the Chalcographie du musée du Louvre, received 40 copper plates engraved for the prestigious publication: Le Sacre de S. M. l'Empereur Napoléon, dans l'Église Métropolitaine de Paris, le 11 frimaire an XIII, dimanche de Décembre 1804, better known as the Livre du Sacre. Commissioned by the emperor himself, this luxurious album gives a very detailed presentation of the setting, scenes and costumes of that unique ceremony.

This exhibition shows the illustrations in the Livre du Sacre, printed from the original copper plates using not only traditional printing methods but also using the presses from the Chalcographie workshop. All the illustrations are highlighted with watercolour and gouache, copied from a rare coloured edition held at the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris. The bright colours and gilt show how sumptuous the event and the costumes must have been. Alongside these illustrations, the Musée de l'Armée has placed certain historical figurines wearing uniforms of the period.

The exhibition is organised by the Musée de l'Armée, the Réunion des musées nationaux and the Musée du Louvre, from 15 October, 2004, to 12 January, 2005.
