George Woodberry was a young Englishman who led a career in the British cavalry between 1813-1815, in Portugal and in Spain, then France and belgium. The young lieutenant fought for three years against the French army, from the battle of Vitoria to the battle of Waterloo. His war diary is a little-known text, but is one full of passion, a mix of his experiences, details of his travels and notes on the life of a soldier. His account of Waterloo is perhaps the most prominent part of his diary, as he recounts the very real experience of battle.
The text is presented here for the first time in French, translated and edited by Peter Hicks.
