Heritage Open Days (9 - 12 September, 2010) celebrate England's fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to properties that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission. Every year on four days in September, buildings of every age, style and function throw open their doors, ranging from castles to factories, town halls to tithe barns, parish churches to Buddhist temples. Napoleon.org presents here a selection of Napoleonic-themed events and visits, all of which offer free entry and participation. Royal Armouries, Fort Nelson, Hampshire Enjoy special activities for 2010's Heritage open days: feel the noise and power of the great Victorian guns fired in salute throughout the day, see costumed actors bring the past to life, plus visitors can find out the secrets of Fort Nelson on a guided tour and see the secret tunnels, ramparts and defences of this 150 year-old fortification, including areas not normally open to the public. Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum, Custom Houses, Gloucester For over 300 years, soldiers from the county of Gloucestershire have been at the turning point of history; battles in the Americas, defeating Napoleon and defending Dunkirk. Fort Rowner & Museums, HMS Sultan, Gosport, Hampshire Fort Rowner Tour is one of the Napoleonic forts defending Portsmouth, whilst the Fort Museum gives the history of the fort. The Marine Engineering Museum gives the history of marine engineering in the Royal Navy. Nelson Museum, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk The Nelson Musuem celebrates the life and times of Admiral Lord Nelson, exploring his career, childhood, love of life, battles and tragic death at the battle of Trafalgar. The Norfolk Naval Pillar (Nelson's Monument), Great Yarmouth, Norfolk The Norfolk Naval Pillar, or Nelson's Monument, was built in 1819 and stands 144 feet high. For 2010's Heritage open days, monument guides will be available to explain the history of its construction and links with Admiral Nelson. Ascents into the monument will not be available.
