Details
The exhibition Celebration and satire of an Emperor in 19th-century prints is being held in the two sites of the Museo Nazionale della Residenze Napoleoniche on the island of Elba from 1 April until 11 June 2008. It is entirely devoted to Napoleonic iconography and has a rich selection of prints from four illustrious collections.
This exhibition constitutes a unique opportunity to admire an interesting set of satirical prints from the Matteotti collection. They are remarkable not only for their rarity but also because of their artistic quality. They were bought in December 2007 by the Museo Nazionale as a result of grant from the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and are put on public display in the Galleria Demidoff for the first time.
Alternatively, a set of engravings from the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmi di Livorno collection can be seen in the Palazzina dei Mulini. These engravings, noteworthy for their variety and originality, have also recently been acquired and until now had never been exhibited. They are accompanied by a selection of the finest prints from the Olschki and Turini-De Micheli collections, which already belong to the Museo Nazionale.
The exhibition is based on the juxtaposition of the official images of Napoleon, the celebratory illustrations of the numerous battles in which he was involved and the satirical images which, although present during his rise to power (especially in England), became more widespread and critical after Napoleon's abdication on 11 April 1814 at Fontainebleau.
The exhibition naturally has a special area devoted to Napoleon's stay on Elba, the keystone linking the Emperor's life and his exile. The prints on display documenting the 300 days Napoleon spent on Elba are of considerable artistic worth, great historical interest and extreme rarity, so much so that similar works are conserved in some of the foremost museums specialised in this field. Exhibition designed by Roberta Martinelli with the assistance of Monica Guarraccino.
