Abel Gance’s Napoleon

From 13 November, various UK cinemas will be screening “Napoleon” by Abel Gance, on the occasion of the release on DVD / Blu-Ray produced by the British Film Institute and Photoplay Productions based on the restoration* (of 2000) by Kevin Brownlow (duration: 5h30), with a new score by Carl Davis (the longest ever composed for a silent film) recorded by the Philharmonia Orchestra.

*This is not the restoration announced in January 2015 by the French Cinemathèque, Francis Ford Coppola (American Zoetrope) and Robert A. Harris (The Film Preserve Ltd). This future version under the direction of Georges Mourier and with the support of the CNC – whose release date is still unknown – will benefit from new research (two new versions of the film dating from 1971 have since been recovered) as well as new analysis of the archives of Abel Gance by the Cinémathèque since 2008.
