The “Amici della biblioteca”, the local culture society in Cassano delle Murge (Puglia, Italy), and their president Angela Diceglie, together with the Altamura “Club Federiciano”, led by president Bianca Tragni, are to organise a travelling exhibition dedicated to the King of Naples called: “Il mantello di Gioacchino Murat” (The Mantle of Joachin Murat). The inauguration of the exhibition will take place on 8 October at 18.30 at the Cassano Pinacoteca Comunale paintings museum in Via Sanges, and the show will last until 19 October.
The mantle was given by Murat himself to Gioacchino De Gemmis, bishop of Altamura, because the latter blessed the “Albero della Libertà” (Liberty Tree) in 1799. This finely embroidered silk piece of historical memorabilia was kept at Altamura cathedral (building dating from 1200) until 2015, when the cathedral authorities allowed the Club Federiciano to study, restore and exhibit the mantle in the Mudima Diocesan Museum Matronei Altamura (or women’s galleries) in the Cathedral.
The Cassano exhibition will go on successively to Altamura and then to the Museo Civico in Bari. Finally, on 11 November, 2017, also at the Bari Museo Civico, there will be an international conference entitled: “Gioacchino Murat urbanista innovatore” (Joachin Murat, innovator in urbanism), including participants from New York, and the Sorbonne, Paris, etc.
Simultaneously there will be an exhibition of 11 artists and their works freely inspired by the mantle, inter alia: Anna Maria Di Terlizzi, Marina Leo, Ferrucio Magaraggia, Armando Mele, Gennaro Piccinni, Paolo Sciancalepore, Antonio Sette, and Lino Sivilli, under the aegis of artistic director Michele Agostinelli.
The exhibitions are free and sponsored by the Comune di Cassano delle Murge.
