On the Nile, 28th October

Dear Minister,

I have just this instant received an order from Her Majesty the Empress to submit for your approval a list of the Aigle’s officers and sailors who should receive crosses and medals. Realising that I was not in a position to do it here, she charged me with the honour of informing you that I would do it by telegraph upon my return to Alexandria.

Her Majesty would like to present these decorations herself on arrival in France and before leaving the vessel.

The Empress’s voyage in Upper Egypt continues in the best of conditions. Despite the excessive heat, Her Majesty is still in excellent health

Your Excellency’s most humble and devoted servant.

J. de Surville
