Venice, 3 October 1869,

of the Navy and the Colonies

Venice, 3rd October, 1869

Dear Minister,

In order to keep Your Excellency informed of the various events which go on during the Empress’s voyage, I have the honour of letting you know that, yesterday afternoon, a short time after the expedition referred to in my dispatch of 2nd October, Her Majesty took a trip along the Venetian canals. The Italian government was quick to put the royal gondolas at the Empress’s service.

In the evening, Her Majesty went on shore and stopped briefly at the King’s Palace to see the illuminations in St. Mark’s Square.

Everyone who came to see Her Majesty gave her a very warm welcome.

Today, Sunday, the Empress went to mass at the cathedral where the Cardinal officiated. At 1 o’clock in the afternoon, she received His Majesty Victor Emmanuel on board and the yacht paid him all the royal honours. At 2 o’clock, she visited the Ducal Palace and this evening, she sailed the length of the Grand Canal where a night-time celebration was given in her honour by the city.

Sub-Lieutenant Dubois, due to be taken on board the Aigle, arrived in Venice, today.

Your Excellency’s most devoted servant,

Captain of the yacht the Aigle,

Prince Humbert arrives today to visit Her Majesty
J. de Surville
