Letter from the captain
Captain de Surville's log
Venice, 7 October 1869.

Admiral and Minister
of the Navy and the Colonies
Paris

Venice, 7th October, 1869

Dear Minister,

I have the honour of informing Your Excellency that the yacht leaves for Piraeus today at 10 o’clock in the morning, taking the direct route.

Since the dispatch I sent Your Excellency on 3rd October, nothing of particular interest has happened. The Empress, who is in excellent health, has spent a great part of each day visiting the town’s monuments and museums. Everywhere she has been, the population has paid her the warmest and most respectful signs of greeting.

Your Excellency’s most devoted servant,

Captain of the yacht the Aigle,
J. de Surville
