In this week's letter... we bring you a brand new book of the month, about the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars in European cultural memory, written by experts in the Napoleonic field and edited by Karen Hagemann and Alan Forrest. As well as our book of the month, we're also highlighting several other recent publications which will be of interest, from the practical to fiction. We then have some news from the Fondation about the annual accounts, which may be of interest to the mathematically minded! Following on from that, we have news of more Napoleonic goings-on all over the world: the International Napoleonic Society annual congress (this year in Toronto) and a large re-enactment at Wavre in Belgium. You'll also find details of a call for submissions for the Prix Napoléon III for a book related to the Second Empire, to be awarded in November. Next up are some excellent videos about various parts of the exhibition Napoléon et l'Europe (worth watching, though the voice-over is in French), and as ever, you'll find details of things we've seen on the web this week: video of Josephine's jewellery box at auction, news about the War of 1812 re-enactments and a new Napoleonic blog (in German), dedicated to widening access to sources and scholarship. Enjoy!

News from the Fondation The annual accounts of the Fondation Napoléon are online. These were created by our treasurer, Count Nicolas Walewski, validated by our auditors, approved by the administrative council and published in the official journal. The report details financial elements in which those who are acquainted with it can find the budget items related the activity of the Fondation. Amounting to a sum of 1,68M, this included: the grant given to the Souvenir Napoléonien (19%), various sponsorships (1%), the management and conservation of the collection (12%), the library (7%), the website (16%), Napoleonica. La Revue (2%), the publication of the Correspondance (8%), the prizes and scholarships (5%), and general administration (30%). Our careful management of revenue, which mostly comes from the Lapeyre legacy, has meant that we covered these expenses with a surplus of 29 459 , the costs associated with the Fondation's change in location to 7 rue Geoffroy St Hilaire notwithstanding.

Book of the Month War Memories: Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars in Modern European Culture, ed. Alan Forrest and Karen Hagemann This interdisciplinary volume brings together Napoleonic experts from all over the world. It examines the transfer of experience and memory to future generations in European culture and the various media through which experience and memory passed. Focusing on the legacy of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, the various authors examine the intersection between experience and memory, between the private and the public, and between the memories of the individual, groups, regions, nations, and the continent of Europe touched by these events.
Recently Published As well as our book of the month this week, we bring you several other recent Napoleonic publications which are bound to be of interest. Firstly, there's David Buttery's Waterloo Battlefield Guide, which will prove indispensable to visitors of the battlefield site. Secondly, there is Empire and Military Revolution in Eastern Europe by Brian Davies, which looks at the effect of the Crimean and Ottoman conflicts had on the Russian military. And for those of you interested in historical fiction, we have have two novels about the Crimean war: Into the Valley of Death and The Scarlet Thief.

150 Years Ago The War in Mexico On 11 June, 1863, le Moniteur transcribed a telegram from de Montholon, consul general of France in New York : “News of Havana and Vera Cruz. Puebla is ours. Ortega has surrendered unconditionally.” This telegram recounted how, after an intense siege, 18,000 men had followed Ortega in this surrender. The missive in fact arrived nearly a month after the Mexican general had actually capitulated, on 17 May 1863. The Mexican expedition had just hit the readers of le Moniteur a few days earlier. The reports in its pages gave an account of the continued resistance French troops met as they progressed. The victory of Puebla was to be merely fleeting.
200 Years Ago The Reichenbach Treaties On 14 June, 1813, the British and Prussians signed the Reichenbach Treaty. Britain pledged £666,660 to Prussia to help maintain their force of 80,000 troops. In exchange for this, the Prussian King agreed to cede the principality of Hildesheim to Hanover. This was the first in a series of treaties between the Allies signed at the town of Reichenbach during June 1813. On 15 June, Britain and Russia signed the second treaty, in which Britain agreed to provide Russia with a subsidy of over £1 million to maintain its army. The third Reichenbach Treaty, signed on 27 June between Prussia, Russia and Austria, officially brought the latter into the war against the French.
