THIS MONTH'S PAINTING The Downpour (L'Averse), by Louis Léopold Boilly A genre scene specialist, Boilly was a popular artist whose work has a significant documentary value. "The Downpour" (L'Averse), or "Pay to cross", shows Parisians in difficulty in the rain, in a capital without pavements or sidewalks: they were only allowed to cross the central gutter on boards if they paid a fee to the 'passeurs'. PROFESSOR JACQUES-OLIVIER BOUDON ELECTED TO THE SORBONNE 6 May, 2003, Jacques-Olivier Boudon was elected professor at the Paris Sorbonne University (Paris IV). He will therefore succeed Jean Tulard in the Chair of History of the Revolution and the Empire. Born in 1962, Professor Boudon had up to now been lecturer in contemporary history at the University of Rouen. He is also president of the Institut Napoléon and member of the jury for the Fondation Napoléon's Grands Prix and Research Grants. The Fondation Napoléon presents its warmest congratulations to Professor Boudon. FIRST EVER NAPOLEONIC EXHIBITION IN HONG KONG For the first time ever in Hong Kong, an exhibition has been organised concerning Napoleon. On show are 170 pieces from the collection of the Château de Malmaison. The exhibition is part of the Hong Kong history museum's 'Le French May' festival. TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO 21 Floréal, An XI (11 May, 1803), Bonaparte opposed the British ultimatum demanding that he leave Dutch territory. Franco-British tension was at its zenith. 24 Floréal, An XI (14 May, 1803), in Paris, the First Consul went for the first time in two years to the Prytanée and later attended a performance of Polyeucte, au Théâtre de la République. On the same day, "an extraordinary communication was made to the Corps Législatif, the Tribunat and the Sénat by three deputation each composed of three Conseillers d'Etat. They are thought to be related to the departure of the British ambassador. Everything occurred in private committee." Le Moniteur, 25 Floréal, An XI Wishing you an excellent, Napoleonic, week!
