THE FRENCH NAVY ARCHIVES WEB SITE
The French Navy Archives, the Service Historique de la Marine (SHM) looks after all the French navy's papers. And this includes, books, maps, manuscripts and ancient photographs.
The collection as a whole is spread over six different sites, the central hub at Vincennes and five satellites, at the navy bases of Brest, Rochefort, Cherbourg, Lorient and Toulon. Vincennes holds the central archives, the central library, the study service, the symbol and heritage collections, the publications department and all the general sections such as general adminstration, the computer departments, etc.
The web site of the SHM gives a presentation of the different services it offers, as well as articles, research tools, inventories, items held at Vincennes, the publications' catalogue, the manuscript catalogue for the library, and the maps and charts depository.
A must for all those interested in the French Navy! (In French)

A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY
The French national navy museum, the Musée National de la Marine, in the Place du Trocadéro, Paris, is preparing a huge exhibition on the theme, 'Napoleon and the Sea'. It is to run for six months, from March 2004. And it promises to be just as excellent as those of the past held at this (increasingly less) little-known museum.

TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO
6 Prairial, An XI (26 May, 1803), Frochot, Préfet of the Département de la Seine, decided to launch voluntary subscriptions for the building, arming and equipping of cannon barges and transports. The notice was to be placed in every Mairie in Paris, starting on 10 Prairial (30 May, 1803).
Le Moniteur, 10 Prairial, An XI

7 Prairial, An XI (27 May, 1803), General Mortier and his army occupied Hannover, the fief of George III.

Wishing you an excellent, Napoleonic, week!
