ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS AGO
3 July, 1853, the Russians invaded Moldavia and Walachia, principalities under Ottoman tutelage. After failure in his attempt at an agreement with Britain over the sharing out of Turkey, Tsar Nicholas I decided to use strong arm tactics, giving as a pretext that he was protecting Orthodox Christians in Muslim territory.

TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO
8 Messidor, An XI (27 June, 1803),
Britain refused once again to leave Malta and also to take part in any mediation.

On the same day, Bonaparte passed a bill for the work on the port of Amiens, in the Baie de Somme. The city gates of Noyon and Beauvais were furthermore to be enlarged to allow the passing of heavily loaded transport vehicles.
Correspondance of Napoleon, arrêté (bill) n° 6862, Amiens,
8 Messidor, An XI

The First Consul demanded that the sale of 'biens nationaux' (national property) be speeded up so as to provide extra funds for the war against Britain.
Correspondance of Napoleon, letter n° 6863 to the Minister of Finances, Gaudin, 8 Messidor, An XI

On a round of inspection of his armies from Boulogne to Antwerp, Bonaparte arrived in Boulogne on 10 Messidor, An XI (29 June, 1803), after a short journey through Abbeville and Etaples on the same day. On 1 July, he was in Calais, the following day in Dunkerque until 6 July.

11 Messidor, An XI (30 June, 1803), the British took possession of the islands of Santa Lucia and Tobago.

Wishing you an excellent, Napoleonic, week, and an enjoyable holiday if you're leaving in July!
