Please excuse the technical problems which we have been experiencing recently with the sending of the letter and replying to your messages.

Welcome to the new napoleon.org!

Clearer presentation, more intuitive navigation and more direct access to the information

There are three main sections, of which the first presents the Essential Napoleon, an introduction to the key elements in the history of the First and Second Empires. The second proposes a magazine-style presentation of news and information, with daily, weekly and monthly updates, not to mention a Gallery showing history in pictures. The third section has a space for collectors and thematic forums for you to express your point of view

There are also new parts to the site and new services: a Republican calendar converter, quizzes and an FAQ page, a Reading Room with articles, bibliographies, timelines and biographies, and a section where you can store parts of the site to read later...

And there's lots more. But we'll let you discover that for yourselves.
Best wishes for an excellent 2002!

TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO...

12 January (22 Nivôse, An X), the Gazette Nationale gave the following notice of publication:
"Cit.[izen] Levo, employed at the Monnaie (Mint), has published a 'Table of Comparison for the new kilogram and its subdivisions, comparing them with the pound, ounce, gross and grain of the 'poids de marc' system, in the form of a multiplication table'. [...] This is designed to facilitate the use of the kilogram in business, so as to replace the pound, which varies so much from département to département. This work tool, printed in table form on a single sheet of fine paper, can be bought at Jecker's shop for 25 cent.[îmes] (15 s.[ols] tournois), at the depositary of the new weights, Palais du Tribunat, Galerie de Bois, n° 232. NB. Instructions written by the author on how to use the table are provided."

13 January (23 Nivôse, An X): from Lyon, Bonaparte sent a note to Consul Cambacérès in which he mentioned the warm reception which he had received from the people of Lyons. He also mentioned his project for a discussion in the Conseil d'état of the ban on gambling and lotteries in all towns in the Republic except Paris.
Correspondance, tome VII, n° 5917

16 January (26 Nivôse, An X): in Rouen, with the commercial exchanges in full expansion, the Tribunal de commerce in the town set up a price watchdog committee for the town exchange:
"citizens Bucaille, Brouard, Cuvelier and Denel, are ordered [...] to draw up a list of current prices for merchandise. This list will then be kept under surveillance in order to maintain its accuracy. It should be drawn up on the day following each trading day in every exchange, at midday, in one of the chambers at the tribunal, in the presence of one of the judges of the said tribunal, and signed by him, before being sent for printing."
Gazette nationale, 30 Nivôse, An X.

Wishing you a very enjoyable, Napoleonic, week.
