NAPOLEON IN MEXICO
Following on from São Paulo (2003) and Paris (2004), the Fondation Napoléon is to present a large part of its collection in Monterrey (north-east Mexico) at the town's Glass Museum, the Museo del Vidrio. Enjoying the academic and artistic collaboration of Mexico's national museum board, this museum has already hosted prestigious international exhibitions (notably of Egyptian artefacts, primitive art and Italian glass). From 14 February to 14 June, it has decided to offer an exhibition unprecendented in Mexico on Napoleon and the First Empire.
Called simply, Napoléon, the show will be a chance for a Mexican public to discover court life in imperial France and the exceptional talent of the artisans commissioned by the imperial couple and dignitaries of the empire. It includes notably: Sèvres manufactory plates from the "Headquarters Service"; many objects which once belonged to Napoleon himself; travel "nécessaires" commissioned by first empire dignitaries; paintings; and magnificent pieces related to court life, including costumes and uniforms.
The Fondation Napoléon has received prestigious loans from the Musée National de Malmaison and the Paris Musée de l'Armée.
The former has offered paintings, one of the empress Josephine's court trains, and several pieces of glassware from the imperial services. The loan from the Musée de l'Armée comprises a dozen objects, amongst which are the uniform worn by Napoleon at the battle of Marengo, the hat he wore during the French Campaign of 1814, and the coronation stool. Also on show will be the exceptional portrait of Napoleon I at Fontainebleau by Delaroche, presented on napoleon.org here below.

THIS MONTH'S PAINTING
Napoleon I at Fontainebleau, 31 March, 1814, by Paul Delaroche (1797-1856)
Often described as showing Napoleon at Fontainebleau after his first abdication, this icon of the imperial legend in fact shows the emperor several days before he performed that political act. Defeated, and already abandoned by many of his erstwhile supporters, here he is alone in his private apartments in Fontainebleau, staring destiny in the face.
The painting was bought in Paris by the British collector, John Naylor, in 1852, only subsequently to be acquired by Francis Howard, who then donated it to the Musée de l'Armée in 1954." An article by F. Lacaille, curator at the Musée de l'Armée © Le Gall 1990 / Reproduction rights: Musée de l'Armée - Paris

This bi-lingual section can be accessed from the general navigation bar at the top of every page, in the red column. The dossiers are downloadable in pdf format.
If, for professional reasons, you would like to be informed regarding the publication on line of new communiqués, please let us know.
