On 29 April, 1806, the architect Fontaine noted in his journal that the establishment which minted commemorative medals the Monnaie des médailles, which had been situated in the basement of the Musée Napoléon (today's Louvre), was to be moved to «a part of the buildings currently occupied by the Mint (Monnaie des espèces) in rue Guénégaud [the current site of the Monnaie de Paris]».

On 29 april, 1856, Victor Hugo published two volumes of poetry entitled Les Contemplations. Most of the poems (158 in total, arranged in six books) were written between 1846 and 1855, although the collection does include some composed as early as 1834. Living in exile of the channel island of Guernsey, Hugo describes the reasons for the publication in the preface, which is dated March 1856: «This work should be read as if it were by a dead man. There are twenty-five years in these two volumes. Grande mortalis aevi spatium (A large portion of a mortal's life). The author has allowed, if you will, this book to grow inside him. Life, passing drop by drop through the events and sufferings, as if through a filter, has deposited it in his heart. […] What are these Contemplations? It is what you could call, if the word did not have a certain pretention, the Memoirs of a soul… ».
