NAPOLEON.ORG 'III' After After eighteen months of development and realisation, the Fondation Napoléon has launched the third version of its general public website (founded in 1996) dedicated to the study of the two Napoleons and the Napoleonic world, www.napoleon.org. In addition to a new ergonomic design and improved navigation, the site now has a number of exciting new sections. These include: Kids' Corner, containing age-specific content, ranging from mazes, word-searches and colouring-in for children from 3 years and up, to documents and timelines for young teenagers; Close-ups, our detailed studies on individual events from the history of the First and Second Empires; Napoleonica Research Online, with primary sources, books and library catalogues for the Napoleonic historian; and The Masterpieces, our new, interactive presentation of some of the finest works from the Fondation Napoléon's collection. Whether you are a veteran visitor to the site or new arrival, the team at napoleon.org wishes you an excellent visit to the all new napoleon.org! Victor-André Masséna, prince d'Essling President of the Fondation Napoléon

ARTICLE OF THE MONTH Napoleon III and Abd-el-Kader, by Eric Anceau At the mid point of the 19th century, Napoleon III and Abd el-Kader were the most important figures in their respective countries, France and Algeria. They were both born in 1808, the former on 20 April and the latter on 6 September. Since 2008 is the bicentenary year of birth, now is a good time to take a look at their relations.
This summer, Eric Anceau was awarded the Prix du Mémorial by the town of Ajaccio, in Corsica, for his remarkable biography of Napoleon III. It came out this year, the bicentenary of Napoleon III's birth, and is published by Tallandier. Click here for more information. Click here to read the article of the month. Also coming soon: a close-up on Abd-el-Kader on www.napoleon.org.

200 YEARS AGO Spain-Portugal The 20 September edition of the Moniteur reported the proclamation made by Napoleon on 11 September to galvanise the advance-guard troops of the Grande Armée: "Soldiers, having triumphed on the banks of the Danube and the Vistula, you force-marched across Germany; today, you will cross France without a moment's rest. Soldiers, I have need of you. The leopard's [England's] hideous presence is defiling the continents of Spain and Portugal, but at the sight of you, it will flee in terror! Let us carry our eagles, triumphant, to the Pillars of Hercules [the Straits of Gibraltar, under English control]. [...] A true Frenchman cannot, must not, rest until the seas and open and free." On 18 September Napoleon gave the order to the Prince de Neuchâtel (Maréchal Berthier, major-général of the Grande Armée) that the proclamation be read aloud "in the principle town-centres. [...] You will see to it that the officers inform you of the men's reaction to the proclamation." (Correspondance n°14338) 150 YEARS AGO Brienne "On Tuesday 7 September 1858, in the town of Brienne-Napoléon, the town's newly-restored church organ was unveiled in the presence of the mayor, the town council, the architect of the département and the town populace. The restoration was made possible by funds bequeathed by the emperor Napoleon I. Funds from his bequest were also used in the building of the town hall." (Le Moniteur universel, 18 September 1858) Wishing you an excellent, Napoleonic, week.
