THIS MONTH'S PAINTING The beach at Trouville In the summer, Second Empire high society moved en masse to the Normandy coast: frock coats and crinolines invaded the beaches. This painting by Eugène Boudin shows how far we have come in beach holidays!
FUN STUFF A new jigsaw: a herm of Napoleon bearing an anagram of the words 'Napoléon Empereur des Français et Roi d'Italie' If you find you're not getting anywhere, take a peek at the picture in the Gallery 'In pictures'.
OBITUARY Rod Steiger, who played Napoleon in Sergei Bondarchuk's 1970 film Waterloo died last month, 9 June, 2002. BIBLIOTHEQUE M. LAPEYRE - FONDATION NAPOLEON During the month of August, the Fondation Napoléon's library, the Bibliothèque Martial Lapeyre will have reduced openings times, namely Mondays and Wednesdays, 1-6pm. TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO Before the parade for the '14 juillet' (25 Messidor), the First Consul received from the Prefect of the Département de la Seine and the two Mayors of Paris, a superb Frenchbred race horse, "as a sign of the appreciation and respect of the citizens of Paris". Le Moniteur universel, 27 Messidor For the first time in a '14 juillet' parade, Parisians were presented with the spectacle of a ride-past by a squadron of mounted Mameluks. In conformity with the bill passed by Ministre de l'intérieur, Chaptal, as recorded in the 'Moniteur universel' of 8 Messidor, An X, "In Paris, in each of the twelve municipalities, on the 14 July, the marriage [was celebrated] of a young woman to a young man who had been chosen from amongst the young people in that municipality because they had distinguished themselves by their courage. The same ceremony [is to] place in the chef-lieu (major town) of every arrondissement, on 1 Vendémiaire of the same year. The prefects and sub-prefects [in concert] with the municipality of the place are to provide for the dowries of the young women and oversee the legislation defining the order of events [to take] place on the occasion of these marriages.
In Paris on the evening of 14 July, a grand concert [was held] on the terrace of the Tuileries. The Palais du Gouvernement (i.e., the Tuileries palace) [was] illuminated, as was the Jardin des Tuileries and the Place de la Concorde." Wishing you an excellent, Napoleonic, week!
