Telling the history of the First and Second Empires and bringing the Napoleonic heritage to a wider public.
As a place of research and vector for information concerning the First and Second Empires, the Fondation Napoléon both encourages and supports many different projects all with the same primary aims, namely, a deeper understanding of the period and the preservation and highlighting of the Napoleonic heritage.
Addressing all audiences (from the man in the street to the university academic, passing via the enthusiast) the Fondation Napoléon operates in many different spheres. The Fondation provides services : a library open to the public and two internet sites. The Fondation publishes historical studies on the two Empires: La Bibliothèque Napoléon series. The Fondation supports research with its four history Grands Prix and its six Research Grants. Through its patronage, the Fondation assists associations, Napoleonic institutions and the great Napoleonic sites. Founded in 1987 and a registered charity (reconnue d'utilité publique), the Fondation Napoléon, is funded by gifts and endowments, most notably by the bequest made to the Napoleonic world by Martial Lapeyre, renowned industrialist and great enthusiast for Napoleonic history. The president of the Fondation Napoléon is Prince d’Essling.
