Notes:
After the first day of battle at Wagram (5 July, 1809), French troops set up a bivouac in order to rest and recover from the intense combat. At the centre of this painting is Napoleon, seated, who is surrounded by his generals, military staff and other members of the army. The following morning would be decisive and Archduke Charles and his Austrian army would be defeated.
