This year marks two hundred years since the British invaded the port city of Alexandria, Virginia, and the City of Alexandria's War of 1812 Bicentennial Commemoration is organising a number of events to honour the occasion. Highlights include:
24 April – War of 1812 Film Gala (Old Town Theater)
The City of Alexandria's War of 1812 Bicentennial Commemoration officially launches with a film screening of Master and Commander, a special reception, an exhibition of clothing worn on the film set, and a pre-screening film discussion. $30 of the $75 sponsor tickets will be donated to the American Wounded Warriors and British Help for Heroes foundations.
30 April to 28 May – War of 1812 Lectures (The Lyceum)
Discover the War of 1812 as it relates to to Alexandria and the region through a series of special lectures co-sponsored by the Alexandria Historical Society and The Lyceum, Alexandria's History Museum.
14 June – War of 1812 Boat Cruise (Old Town Alexandria)
Explore Alexandria's War of 1812 history by boat! Tour includes period-inspired food, accounts of the Battle of the White House at Fort Belvoir and Fort Washington, plus costumed characters.
31 August – War of 1812 Signature Event
A culmination of festivities along Alexandria's historic waterfront, featuring exhibits, food vendors and waterfront activities plus a rematch between Alexandria residents and the British Embassy.
