Germany: The House of Hanover on the British throne 1714-1837

From 17 May to 5 October 2014, five exhibitions in palaces and museums around Hanover and Celle will recount the political union which lasted 123 years, bringing the Electorate of Hanover and the Kingdom of Great Britain together under a single monarch. The exhibitions include numerous items which come from various collections including the Royal Collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The Lower Saxony State Museum (Hanover) presents a general overview of the period, drawing from various sources, including biographies from the monarchs of the time. The Museum of Herrenhausen Palace (Hanover) is staging a show based on the eve of the personal union and its early years. The centrepiece of the exhibition at the Historisches Museum (Hannover) is the Royal State Coach which was built in 1782 for the Opening of Parliament ceremony in London. The Wilhelm Busch – Deutsches Museum für Karikatur und Zeichenkunst (Hannover) presents British caricatures from this period, which mock this political union. Finally, at the Residenzmuseum in Celle Castle, various works of art from the period are on show .
