Performance of Thomas Hardy’s Wessex Scenes in Dorchester

The Wessex Scenes is a play that Thomas Hardy wrote during WWI to raise money for the Red Cross and draws from another of his works, “The Dynasts”, comparing the Napoleonic wars to the warfare of WWI. The play is mainly set around the ten years between the Battle of Trafalgar (1805) and the Battle of Waterloo (1815) and is seen from the point of view of ordinary people from Budmouth (Weymouth), who lost many men to the wars and who lived in constant fear of invasion.

This will be the first performance of this play since 1916, given by the New Hardy Players. They will be performing in the garden of Thomas Hardy's Max Gate home in Dorchester on 11 and 12 July, 2014 at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from Dorchester Tourist Information Centre or on +44 1305 262538.
