"Les Adieux à l’Impératrice" at Malmaison

“… On 29 May, 1814, Empress Josephine died of a severe throat infection, after two weeks of illness. Given the turbulent times, which saw the fall of the Empire and the return of the Bourbon monarchy, the news of Josephine's death could have passed by unmarked. In fact, a huge crowd – which included the celebrities of the day as well as the allied monarchs who were occupying France – gathered at Malmaison and squeezed itself into the church at Rueil to pay their respects to the Empress.

“…To mark the bicentenary of Josephine's death, this exhibition evokes her passing and the events that followed through a wide variety of objects – some luxurious, others more modest witnesses – and portraits…”

This exhibition is on show between 5 November, 2014 and 2 February, 2015. Find more information (in French) on the Château de Malmaison's website.
