Photo exhibition: ‘Napoleon on St. Helena: Exile and sincerity’

This exhibition at the Maison Bonaparte (Napoleon's birthplace) in Ajaccio, Corsica, displays Napoleon's private writing alongside contemporary photographs of St. Helena by Olivier Roques-Rogery.

Napoleon's exile on St. Helena was a so-called 'period of sincerity', where he steps aside from his Corsican roots to consider the island with surprising acuteness, looking at Pasquale Paoli's politics, Corsican society and his family's political views and choices. Of particular note is his gradual move away from Paoli's party towards the French.

The presentation of Napoleon's writing along with Roques-Rogery's photos evokes St. Helena then and now, and its abiding memory of Napoleon.
