Napoléon Ier et la légende des arts

This exhibition – organised by the Réunion des Musées Nationaux – Grand Palais and the Palais de Compiègne in collaboration with the Royal Castle of Warsaw – explores the arts under the First Empire from some surprising angles.

Between 1800 and 1815, the arts not only served to glorify Napoleon I; the decorative arts, painting and sculpture of this period also saw the emergence of original patterns and colours, and innovative and functional forms. From neo-classicism to troubadour style or pre-romanticism, great artists heralded that era: David, Prud'hon, Girodet or Géricault.

Just as 1815 would herald a new peace and equilibrium in Europe, the arts that glorified Napoleon's Empire would also have far-reaching effects. A new taste permeated both French and European society, especially in the Grand Duchy of Warsaw, and would continue its influence right into the twentieth century.

With this exhibition the Palace of Compiègne in collaboration with the Royal Castle in Warsaw wishes to show the originality, wealth and modernity of the time, with works from major French public collections. The exhibition will later be presented in Warsaw (11 september – 13 December 2015), enriched by works from Polish collections.
