An exhibition organised by the University of Nottingham's Manuscripts and Special Collections department at Lakeside's Weston Gallery will showcase material from the University of Nottingham's own collections including many eye-witness accounts from local soldiers who fought in the Napoleonic wars.
According to archivist Kathryn Summerwill “The manuscript material is particularly engaging and immediate. Reading eye-witness accounts of the Battles of Talavera and Waterloo reminds us of the human cost of war and provokes sympathy with the local men who travelled hundreds of miles to fight against Napoleon and his army.”
One of the regular foot regiments which drew its manpower from Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire was the 45th Foot. While it missed Waterloo, the regiment fought with distinction with Wellington in the Peninsular campaign in Spain and Portugal. The regiment's battle honours included Talavera in 1809 when more than 5,000 of Wellington's army were killed and wounded.
