Symposium: From Waterloo to New Jersey: The Bicentennial of King Joseph Bonaparte’s Escape to America

The Pennington School will host a symposium as an extension of its landmark exhibition entitled “From Waterloo to New Jersey: The Bicentennial of King Joseph Bonaparte’s Escape to America.” The exhibition, to be held in the Silva Art Gallery on the campus of The Pennington School will be open to visitors on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. The symposium will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the School’s Stainton Hall Lecture Center that same day. Both events will be presented in conjunction with Monmouth University.

The symposium, conducted by Peter Tucci, Esq., and Richard Veit, Ph.D., will discuss the two collections that have been brought together for this exhibition. The Peter Tucci Collection of Joseph Bonaparte Memorabilia contains over 50 original letters and documents from Joseph Bonaparte, as well as furniture, coins, and books with a Joseph Bonaparte provenance. The second collection consists of artifacts excavated by archaeologist Veit at the site of Point Breeze, the Joseph Bonaparte estate in Bordentown, N.J.. Veit is professor of anthropology and chair of the History and Anthropology Department at Monmouth University. Tucci, who has been collecting Joseph Bonaparte items for over 20 years, is chair of the Board of Trustees of The Pennington School. The symposium will also feature a presentation prepared by Veit entitled, “Laying Out Some of the Spoils of Europe in an Elegant Mansion and Grounds.”
