‘Delacroix et l’antique’ (Delacroix and antiquity)
Delacroix: Study of a male nude (also known as "le polonais")

The Musée national Eugène-Delacroix has recently opened an exhibition dedicated to Delacroix and his fascination with antiquity; a topic which, until now, has barely been explored. The exhibition also discusses the Dictionnaire des beaux-arts, which Delacroix embarked on in 1857, but left unfinished after his death in 1863. Talleyrand and the Duke of Morny's role here should not be underestimated – as their protégé, Delacroix was admitted to the Académie des beaux-arts, having already been rejected six times, and it was here that Delacroix undertook his first formal academic study of painting.
The exhibition is held in Delacroix's former atelier on Rue de Fürstenberg, (now the home of the Musée national Eugène-Delacroix), conserved as it was in Delacroix's time. It features the artist's drawings and paintings and the texts that inspired him, not to mention the sculptures that he chose for the decor of the facade facing the garden.
This exhibition has multiple items on loan from the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, particularly the Coins, Medals and Antiques Department, as well as from the British Museum and the Department of Greek, Etruscan, and Roman Antiquities of the Louvre.
As well as a series of conferences, organised along side this exhibitioon, a special welcome is reserved for younger visitors with drawing materials.
