THIS MONTH'S ARTICLE Joseph Bonaparte's American Retreat, by Patricia Tyson Stroud After Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo in 1815 and subsequent surrender to the English aboard the HMS Bellerophon, Joseph Bonaparte set sail for exile in the new world, and for a life in which he and his art collection truly became ornaments to society. NOTA BENE: CHRISTMAS CLOSURE OF THE BIBLIOTHEQUE M. LAPEYRE - FONDATION NAPOLEON The Bibliothèque M. Lapeyre - Fondation Napoléon will close on Monday, 23 December, reopening on Monday 6 January, 2003, at 1pm. TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO The Journal des débats of 22 Frimaire, An XI (13 December, 1802) reported that a new style appeared in Paris, in the Chaussée d'Antin neighbourhood: many house owners were beginning to build Dillon pavements (sidewalks) in front their houses and town mansions. Named after their inventor, Arthur Dillon, these sidewalk pavements were made using small flat squares of stone, chamfered towards the courtyard gates and with no ridge so as not to damage carriage wheels. Their maximum height was 3 to 4 inches (i.e., 8 to 10 cm). However, according to the Journal des bâtiments civils of 12 Nivôse, An XI (2 January, 1803), the invention was made by a Frenchman, the aptly-named building entrepreneur Larue, who first made this sort of pavement in front of his house on the Rue des Trois-Frères, in 1793. 28 Frimaire, An XI (19 December, 1802), the First Consul deposited his portrait by David at the Hôtel des Invalides, to be hung in the Great Library.
