NOTA BENE: CHRISTMAS CLOSURE OF THE BIBLIOTHEQUE M. LAPEYRE - FONDATION NAPOLEON
The Bibliothèque M. Lapeyre - Fondation Napoléon will close on Monday, 23 December, reopening on Monday 6 January, 2003, at 1pm.

TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO
30 Frimaire, An XI (21 December, 1802),
the police (police générale) uncovered a band counterfeiting notes issued by the Banque du Commerce, led by the Swiss Boissy, an engraver from Lyons; Thierry, from Chambéry, postman, living in Lyons; and Itier, clockmaker from Paris. As per the law, they were sentenced to six years in irons.

3 Nivôse, An XI (24 December, 1802),
Chambers of commerce were created in 22 towns, but Paris was not to receive such an agency until February 1803. These chambers, with a variable number of members according to the size of the town, had a consultancy role with respect to the economic and industrial situations in their respective regions. Since they were liable to become centres of opposition to the regime, an instruction was circulated on 31 March, 1806, forbidding the publication of the debates.

3 Nivôse, An XI (24 December, 1802), Antoine-Jean-Mathieu Séguier (1768-1848), son of a grand French parliamentary family, an émigré who had returned shortly after Brumaire and close to Cambacérès, was appointed as head of the Paris Tribunal d'appel.

5 Nivôse, An XI (26 December, 1802), a decree assigned a stipend of 500 Francs for each of the 24,000 priests in France.

5 Nivôse, An XI (26 December, 1802), the modifications performed in Italy in conformity with the Treaty of Lunéville were officially recognised by Austria.

Wishing you an excellent, Napoleonic, Christmas!
