Waterloo is very much at the forefront of our minds here at the Fondation Napoléon. The study day to be held in Waterloo on 7 March, co-organised by the Fondation Napoléon and the ABSL Bataille de Waterloo 1815, is well advanced, as is the great parallel Napoleon Wellington exhibition, “Destins croisés” which opens on 20 March – indeed the works of art and historical memorabilia will soon be making their way to the Musée Waterloo. Our book of the month, director Thierry Lentz's “Waterloo” is therefore not only a symbol of the Zeitgeist but also a handy reminder of the story of the affair. Dust off your dictionaries – it's worth the effort! We will of course be keeping you up to date with all the other events related to the Hundred Days. In the meantime, there's plenty to occupy the mind here this week, from First Empire silk to Second Empire civil engineering, from the hand loom to the photographic process. Huge technological leaps for an extraordinary 19th century.
Enjoy your read on napoleon.org.

BOOK OF THE MONTH >“WATERLOO 1815” by THIERRY LENTZ
Many books have been written about the Battle of Waterloo ... “WATERLOO 1815” is not just the work of a specialist of the First Empire, who takes us step by step along the timeline towards the battle which would be fatal to the reign of Napoleon. Thierry Lentz's book is rich with new illustrations and high quality documents some presented for the first time together. The result is an essential book for understanding the context of the battle.

Philippe Vallet invited Thierry Lentz on his show for "The Book of the Day” 29 January 2015 on France Info (in French). Find the podcast of the show here.

EXHIBITION  "JOSÉPHINE, LA PASSION DES ÉTOFFES"
To mark the bicentenary of the death of the Empress Josephine, a great collector of fabrics, the Paris showroom of the Prelle Manufacture presents "« Joséphine, la passion des étoffes ", until 20 February 2015. The exhibition of fabrics from the Prelle archives includes dresses lent by private collectors and also some objects from the collection of the Fondation Napoléon, among them this punch bowl which belonged to Joséphine. To find out more about Prelle and the First Empire's passion for fabrics read this fascinating interview with Maryse Dusoulier the director of Prelle. There's also a photo album on our Facebook page with a few close-ups of the exhibition to whet your appetite!

ANNIVERSARY > THE POLISH CAMPAIGN AND THE BATTLE OF EYLAU (FEBRUARY 8, 1807)
208 years ago the violent battle of Eylau took place, the highest point in the Polish campaign against the forces of the Tsar. Read more about it in our close-up on this campaign and this battle.

200 YEARS AGO > RESOLVING THE POLISH AND GERMAN ISSUES
Eight years to the day after the battle of Eylau* (link) in which Napoleon had forced the Russians to give up Poland, the redistribution of Poland and an agreement regarding Saxony, between Prussia, Austria and Russia had been drawn up by the Prussian diplomat Hardenberg on February 8, 1815 (see Bulletin 743). Germany was also affected by the reorganization: a new form of confederation was in sight, under the auspices of Austria and Prussia, as well as the reorganization of the Germanic territories in the North. These discussions led to a first draft of a confederation constitution on February 10, 1815. The negotiations between the two powers, Austrian and Prussian, and the small Germanic kingdoms would continue on this basis until May. The Congress of Vienna had taken two of its most concrete decisions in this the beginning of the year 1865...

150 YEARS AGO > FIRST JOURNEY THROUGH THE SUEZ CANAL
6 February 1865
,  the Moniteur Universel informed readers that the first boats had made the journey between the Mediterranean and the Red sea along the Suez Canal. In the letter, sent to the chambers of commerce of 28 major European cities, the president of the Suez Canal Company, Ferdinand de Lesseps, announced that “since the 1st of January a daily boat service has been running between Port Saïd and Suez and between Ismaïlia and Zagazig, stopping at all the intermediate ports along the isthmus”, and more specifically recounted his own journey: “upon a large boat carrying twenty-five to thirty people, towed by a steam launch that the company owes to the liberality of H.I.H. Prince Napoléon, we have, in twenty-four hours, travelled the 150 kilometres between the two seas”. Together with distinguished guests, they had all remarked on the ease of the journey. Furthermore, in the communiqué he invited each of the Chambers of Commerce to send a delegate to Alexandria on the 4 April 1865 to discuss the arrangements: “It is time for Commerce to prepare for the opening of the maritime canal to shipping on a grand scale”. Read more about this in our
Suez Canal Close-up.
