IT HAD ALL STARTED SO WELL... On 18 May, 1804, Napoleon became "Empereur des Français", and was annointed and crowned on 2 December. Precisely one year later came the great victory at Austerlitz, the augur of other great victories to come and the symbol of the French domination throughout Europe. But from 1810, the collapse of the Napoleon system seemed unavoidable, characterised by an ever thrusting forward in the hope of preserving an equilibrium in trouble... This is the theme of the eagerly awaited second volume of the Nouvelle Histoire du Premier Empire in which Thierry Lentz brings us a new analysis of this critical period of French and European history. Brilliant analysis, enviably easy style, as always a great read. We look forward volume du 3: La France et l'Europe de Napoléon (1804-1815), also published by Editions Fayard. And for those who missed volume 1 (in French). (I.D. with P.H.) Wishing you an excellent, Napoleonic, week! Peter Hicks Historian and Web editor
