THIS MONTH'S BOOK Napoleon: Centres of power, by Bernard Chevallier This useful, slim volume is a beautifully illustrated compilation of details concerning the private properties, offical residences (both in France and abroad), occupied palaces and residences in exile.
DISCOVERY OF MASS GRAVES OF NAPOLEONIC SOLDIERS IN AUSTRIA AND GERMANY In Austria, a mass grave dating from 1809 has been discovered near to the village of Ober-Siebenbrunn, containing the remains of French soldiers buried after the Battle of Wagram. Full details can be found on the site Histoire.org. In Germany, a similar grave has been discovered during excavations in the Bruehl quarter of the town of Erfurt containing the bodies of about one hundred soldiers of the Napoleonic period. Erfurt was occupied by the French between 1806 and 1813. The men probably died in 1813 in the typhoid epidemic which coursed through French field hospitals of the period. On 16 June, 2004, an official ceremony was held for the re-burial of these bodies in the French section of Erfurt cemetery, a section which also contains the bodies of soldiers who died in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and in the First World War. RE-ENACTMENT OF THE CAMP DE BOULOGNE For two years, from 1803 to 1805, Napoleon methodically planned and organised his attempt to invade England, starting from the port of Boulogne-sur-mer. One of the best-known events at this military camp was the distribution of the first crosses of the Légion d'Honneur, which took place on 16 August, 1804, in front of more than 100,000 soldiers. Every year, the Association Napoléonienne du Boulonnais organises a historical re-enactment of the Camp de Boulogne, including re-enactments of bivouacs, battles and concerts with thousands of re-enactors from Britain, Austria, Spain, Moscow, Belgium and Corsica all in period dress. The re-enactment will take place on 3 and 4 July on two 9-hectare areas set around the Colonne de la Grande Armée. SUMMER OPENING TIMES AT THE BIBLIOTHEQUE FONDATION NAPOLEON - M. LAPEYRE The library will begin operating summer opening times from Wednesday 12 July until Thursday 13 August. 200 YEARS AGO On 9 Messidor, An XII (28 June, 1804), the Chouan Georges Cadoudal was executed. On 12 Messidor, An XII (1 July, 1804) saw the birth of Amandine Lucie Aurore Dupin, better known by her nom de plume, George Sand, whom Heinrich Heine qualified in 1854 as "the greatest prose poet the French possess." Wishing you an excellent, Napoleonic, week! Peter Hicks Historian and Web editor
