Bulletin - Bulletin

    Dear Friends,

you will have noticed that we have been prey to certain technical problems recently, notably with the sending of the weekly news bulletin. Like London double-decker buses, for two weeks you got nothing, and then last week three came along all at once - and what is more the French and English versions went out at different times!

What can we say, other than that we are very sorry.

But resolved not let the technology get the better of them, Irene, Peter and Karine have struggled with what you might call the Y2K bug plus one! and we hope that we have wrestled the beast (also known as 'mail server') into submission. But maybe it has other tricks up its sleeve - we will be keeping a close watch!

Theoretically speaking, everything this week will be back to normal...

Thank you for your patience. I wish you an excellent new year and would be very happy to provide any further information you may require.

TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO...
Paris, 21 January (1 Pluviôse), doctor Hagel was asked by the Interior Minister to publish his Chinese Dictionary, which Hagel had announced in London the previous year. This dictionary was to be augmented with material left by Fourmont, as well as many other elements. Printed at the government's expense, the dictionary was to contain more than 80,000 Chinese characters.

Paris, 21 January (1 Pluviôse), the Préfecture de police advised Parisians on the action to take in view of the recent flooding: "Fearing that the flood waters may have leaked into very many houses and caused damage which could result in accidents, the Préfet de police invites house-owners to have their cellars inspected by their architects or builders."
Gazette nationale, 2 Pluviôse.
