THIS MONTH'S ARTICLE
'Napoleon and the Corsican Dilemma - part 2', Barbara KRAJEWSKA
In this the second, and final, part of her fascinating article on Napoleon and Corsica past and present, Barbara Krajewska develops her theme of Napoleon as within the tradition of Corsican family and political feuds, brigandry, and ends with an analysis of present-day Corsican politics.

    THE ARCHIVES NAPOLEON AT THE FRENCH  NATIONAL ARCHIVES NOW ONLINE

The Centre historique des Archives nationales has put online the Fonds Napoléon, better known to researchers by its shelfmark 400 AP. From now on, not only can students consult the inventory for this collection online they can also view the documents themselves, equivalent to 216 archive boxes, in other words 30 metres of shelf space. This archival collection had reviously been microfilmed, and it was this microfilm which was digitalised and put online, thanks to support from the Fondation Napoléon.

Researchers can now read, enlarge or reproduce any of the 143 320 digital images now online with simply a basic internet connection.

For the present, the images of 400 AP 217-221 are not avaiable online: these will be individually digitalised at a later date with the aim of getting a better resolution in the images.

Since this is the Centre historique des Archives nationales's first attempt at putting online digital images of an entire fonds d'archives, there are still some teething problems. Please be patient. If this operation is a success, it could be applied to other fonds d'archives of the Napolenoic period.

"Une visite au chasseur de Napoléon" [Jean-Abraham Noverraz en 1840] in Le Magasin pittoresque (Paris), 1840;
 "Mon entrevue avec Napoléon" [French translation of Basil Hall's account], in Revue de Paris, 1832;
"Napoleon's St Helena portraits" [a collection of drawings made during the years of exile] in: Century illustrated monthly Magazine (New York), 1912

    200 YEARS AGO
On 22 Vendémiaire, An XIV (14 October, 1805), Napoleon, brilliantly aided by Ney's and Lannes' corps, won the victory at Elchingen and forced the Austrians under General Mack to hole up in Ulm.
On the 23rd (15th), Ney and Lannes take up positions on the heights of Michelsberg dominating Ulm.
On the 24th (16th), Napoleon offers Mack the chance to capitulate.
On the 25th (17th), Talleyrand presents to Napoleon his plan for European equilibrium, notably pursuing France's traditional pro-Austrian foreign policy as an attempt to counter Prussia and Russia.
On the 26th (18th), on the Italian front, Massena entered Verona whilst Gouvion Saint-Cyr took the port of Ancona, a key town in the papal state.
On 27 Vendémiaire (19 October), Mack capitulated. On the following day, the Austrian troops filed out of the city before Napoleon.

Wishing you an excellent, Napoleonic, week.
