Ala Napoleonica - Piazza San Marco
Vestibule

Place:Venice

Subjects: Decorative arts, Italy, Napoleon (King of Italy)

Key words: Venice, palace, salon, lamps, pavilion vault

Notes:

The vestibule in the Ala Napoleonica is today the entrance to the Museo Correr. The walls are dressed in an Italian marble known as marmorino. Only one wall has painted decoration - in 'Greek-style' - and there are three monochromes above the doors. There are frescoes on the ceiling. Just as for the grand staircase, Giuseppe Borsato (1771-1849) was in charge of the decoration. Amongst his many collaborators were Pietro Moro, Giovanni carlo Bevilacqua, Giovanni Battista Canal, Odorico Politi. The young Francesco Hayez and experienced Felice Giani also took part in the commission.
The Comité Français de Sauvegarde Venice (the French Save Venice Committee) has launched a project to restore the building, suported by the Napoleon Foundation.
