Exhibition at the Bomann-Museum Celle: ‘Waterloo’

The Bomann-Museum Celle is holding two exhibitions and a range of cultural events to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo.

This exhibition, entitled 'Waterloo', focuses in particular on the King's German Legion, the royal Hanoverian army established in 1813-1814. It played a much more significant role in the battle than has previously been recognised.

Objects on display range from contemporary uniforms, weapons and portraits to modern items of memorial culture. A particular highlight is an oil portrait of General Carl August von Alten on the battlefield, shown for the first time. The exhibition is centred on a 12×5 metre model representing the battlefields with c. 15,000 painted figures, landscape and buildings. LED lights on the model enable visitors to see exactly how the battle progressed.

Alten's portrait will be introduced by the museum's expert on regional and military history, Norbert Steinau, on 11 June 2015 at 3 pm. Entrance with refreshments costs €7,50; reserve tickets by calling (+49) (0) 51 41 12 544. Maximum 20 participants.

Steinau will also be giving a free tour of the exhibition on 21 June 2015 at 11.30 am.

You may also be interested in the museum's symposium on German troops at Waterloo, the workshop 'Waterloo Revisited', and an exhibition on film representations of Napoleon I.
