The summer is upon us, the weather is glorious, and it's time for the final letter before the summer holidays. As such, the focus is very much on rest and relaxation: we have our summer selection for you to peruse, as well as details of Napoleonic tours and itineraries that you can undertake, both in Europe and further afield. We also have a new Object of the Month from our partnership with the Musée de l'Armée for the exhibition Napoléon et l'Europe (which closes this week, so hurry if you haven't been!) And of course, if you're missing us, we'll be updating our facebook page throughout the summer. Have a great holiday - we'll be back in September.

Object of the Month
Memoirs, Journeys and Campaigns in Europe, from Egypt to the Disaster at Waterloo, by Jean-Michel Chevalier
This manuscript of 4 volumes of nearly a thousand pages written by the soldier Chevalier is a lifetime's work. The author debuted editing it in 1830 and during nearly twenty years he ordered notes he had accumulated in the course of his career and illustrated himself. He tells us in his introduction that he is writing his memoirs with the aim of publishing them. The account is told through three themes which merge in the text; firstly the “memoirs” which relate to the life of the author outside of his military campaigns; next the “journeys” in which we read Chevalier's observations about the countries he visited, their inhabitants and their customs; finally the “Campaigns in Europe” which relate his military career with much detail and anecdote.

Fondation Napoléon Summer Selection
Summer holidays are fast upon us, bringing longer days and above all time to catch up on all those books you've wanted to read but didn't have time for. But which ones should you purchase? Which ones should you be reading?  Well, look no further, for we here at the Fondation Napoléon have put together our 2013 Summer Selection, which not only includes some of the latest literature on Napoleonic history, but also digital resources and content, exhibition recommendations and history-themed walks and tours, enough to last you through the next few months of whatever you have planned.

Holiday plans?
Why not follow one of our Napoleonic itineraries on your holidays. There's one for
Corsica (the Ajaccio house in which Napoleon was born is illustrated here opposite), one for Rueil-Malmaison (near Paris) in Josephine's footsteps, and Compiègne, if you're in a more Eugénie frame of mind... or why not Napoleon in New York!

Don't forget...
To check out our 'What's On' section on Napoleon.org - we've been updating throughout the year with plenty of things to keep you occupied over the summer.

Facebook
The letter may be taking a break, but you can keep an eye on the Fondation Napoléon's Facebook page for Napoleonic updates throughout the summer. You don't need to be signed up to Facebook to read the posts and access the links (although you will need an account if you want to say hello or leave us a message) and you may even find the odd discussion breaking out! As well as articles, recently-added content and upcoming event news taken from napoleon.org, we also like to post links to items of Napoleonic interest elsewhere on the web.

Wishing you an excellent "Napoleonic" summer,
