    THIS WEEK'S LETTER...
Article of the month this week deals with the Code d'instruction criminelle of 1808, one of the lesser-known, though remarkably successful, codification processes over which Napoleon presided. Following the announcement of our Grands Prix History Prize and Research Grant winners, we have some photos and a short report on the awards ceremony that took place at the Jockey Club in Paris on Tuesday. We've already told you about our fashion section on the website, and in the same vein, you will find below a bit of information on an exhibition dedicated to Second Empire fashion that takes place at the Musée Galliera in Paris. This week's article selection from Napoleonica. La Revue is also there, as well as a reminder of our Christmas Selection 2008, just in case you're still stuck for gift ideas. 200 years ago recounts the capture of the town of Roses in Spain, and 150 years ago has the establishment of the Compagnie universelle du canal maritime de Suez. In our Magazine section on the right, you will find news of a rather special birthday celebration that took place recently on St. Helena, as well as all the exhibition and conference information.

ARTICLE OF THE MONTH
"The Code d'Instruction criminelle, 1808" by Clémence Zacharie
"Of all the codification processes that France underwent under Napoleon, the process that led to the Code d'Instruction criminelle of 1808 is probably the most remarkable, for a number of reasons. It was the product of a long maturation process, which united revolutionary principles with customs developed during the Ancien Régime and codified by the Ordonnance de Saint Germain en Laye in 1670. The Code d'Instruction criminelle was thus a combination of principle and practice, made all the more remarkable by its longevity..."

Roses

The Bulletin de l'Armée d'Espagne reported on 13 December 1808 the capture of the town of Roses, on the Mediterranean coast. "The Roses citadel surrendered on the 6th; 2,000 men were taken prisoner; a considerable amount of artillery was also found in the citadel. Six English ships of the line, which were anchored outside the harbour, were unable to receive the garrison onboard. General Gouvion Saint-Cyr praised Division General Reille and Division General Pino. The troops of the Kingdom of Italy distinguished themselves during the siege. Today the Emperor inspected [...] all of the troops under Maréchal Duc de Danzig [Marshal Lefebvre]."

After the siege, the troops under the command of General Saint-Cyr force-marched the 150km between Roses and Barcelona in seven days, to meet the Spanish troops massed under Général Vives at Cardedeu on 16 December. Despite the lack of artillery on the French side, Saint-Cyr succeeded in routing the Spanish troops and entered Barcelona on 17 December.

The Suez Canal
On 15 December 1858, the Compagnie universelle du canal maritime de Suez was established after a year-long stock flotation. The response to the flotation was an unprecedented success, with 21,229 people in France purchasing 207,111 shares. Despite this success in France, not all of the stocks reserved by Ferdinand de Lesseps for England, the United States, Russia and Austria were bought.
