AUSTRIA GEARS UP FOR A NAPOLEONIC 2009 While the French calendar remains devoid of any celebrations commemorating the Franco-Austrian war of 1809, Austria's preparations are well underway for several commemorative events. A new exhibition entitled "Napoleon. Feldherr, Kaiser und Genie" will be taking place in the Schallaburg castle from 16 May, 2009, with objects from the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (the largest museum in Austria), the Fondation Napoléon's own collection as well as items from other national French museums. Nor will the major battles from the 1809 campaign go unnoticed, with re-enactments and ceremonies planned in Ebelsberg (3 May), Essling (16 May), Aderklaa (31 May), Wagram (4-5 July), Znojmo-Znaïm (10-12 July), Ulrichskirchen (11 July), Marchegg (12-18 July), Gross-Enzersdorf (25-26 July), Hollabrunn (31 July-2 August), and Golling (4-6 September). On top of this abundance of celebrations, there is also a symposium planned at the Austrian Army Museum from 4 to 6 June: 2009 really will be a rather Napoleonic year for Austria. The Fondation Napoléon is an official partner of the exhibition in Schallaburg and of the international symposium that will take place in Vienna. THIS WEEK'S LETTER Below you will find our new objet d'art of the month, which is the original plaster model of Guillaume's statue of Napoleon I. Elsewhere, we have some information on the restoration of a dress that belonged to the wife of Maréchal Davout, which is being financed by the Fondation Napoléon and details of a Second Empire costume ball in Florence, Italy. Finally, we have our latest selection from issue n° 3 of Napoleonica. La Revue and our 200 and 150 years ago (carnival time in Paris and Black Sea politics, respectively).

OBJET D'ART OF THE MONTH Napoleon I as legislator by Eugène Guillaume "After winning the Prix de Rome in 1845, Eugène Guillaume began a career as official artist, winning many honours on the way, finally to become director of the Académie de France in Rome in 1891 and to the Duc d'Aumale chair at the Académie française in 1898. His work includes an important Napoleonic cycle, for the most part commission from the Prince Napoléon (1822-1891), son of Jérôme Bonaparte." Click here for the rest of the description.

FONDATION NAPOLEON NEWS Restoration of Davout dress Save for those from the Auxerre region, very few people know that the town hall in Auxerre actually has a vast room dedicated to Maréchal Davout,* the Prince d'Eckmühl and one of Napoleon's Marshals. Amongst the items on display, items which were left to the town by the Marshal's daughter, is a dress that was worn by the Princess d'Eckmühl at the marriage of Napoleon and Marie-Louise. This item is very rarely moved, but will go on display to the public in a Napoleonic exhibition taking place at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna between May and November 2009. In preparation for this exhibition, which will feature a large number of the treasures from the Fondation Napoléon's own collection, the dress, made from satin and white tulle picked out with gold and silver florets, will be restored. This restoration will be financed by the Fondation Napoléon. * Unfortunately, and despite the promises of the Conseil Municipal, this museum remains closed, and has been for more than 35 years.

200 YEARS AGO Carnival in Paris The Carnaval de Paris, a Parisian tradition since the 16th century, was much more than a Mardi Gras celebration, comprising balls, feasts and parades, and often began soon after Epiphany, lasting until Ash Wednesday. During the Revolution, it had been suppressed as much for practical reasons as for ideological reasons. As well as the religious implications of the carnival, it was also banned for fear that an abundance of costumes and masks would be too much of an opportunity for conspirators and troublemakers. Click here for more information on Carnaval regulations.
150 YEARS AGO Black sea politics At the mid-point in the nineteenth century, the Danubian principalities of Moldavia and Walachia, (two-thirds of modern-day Romania), were (and had been since 1541) under the suzerainty of the sultan of the Ottoman Empire – the last third of modern Romania, Transylvania, was controlled by Austria.
