    THIS WEEK'S LETTER
We've come back around again, and it's time to announce our new book of the month: Napoleon III. in seiner Zeit - Teil II: Das Verhängnis by Heinrich Euler, which takes a thorough look at the deteriorating relationship between France and Prussia and the outbreak of war. Further down the letter, we have plenty of news from the Napoleonic world: a forthcoming film, online research tools and information regarding Slovenia's bicentenary preparations. There is also the latest on the next atelier organised by the Fondation Napoléon, which will be on music, and a little update on the latest volume of Napoleon Bonaparte's correspondence. Approaching the bottom of the page, you will find that the translation of Elodie Lerner's review of the Napoleon III and Victoria catalogue is now up, and we also have the ever-present selection from Napoleonica. La Revue. Finally, our 200 years ago reports on the premiere of Cosi Fan Tutti, and may upset a few Mozart fans, and 150 years ago presents Napoleon III's review of the diplomatic situation in February 1859. Don't forgot our Magazine section on the right-hand side, where you'll find the latest conferences (7th Annual Conference of the Society of Dix-Neuviémistes), new exhibitions ("Romania on the road to modernity") and news of events marking the anniversary of French presence in South Africa.

BOOK OF THE MONTH
Napoleon III. in seiner Zeit - Teil II: Das Verhängnis (Napoleon III in his epoch - part II: the downfall)
The new book of the month this time around is Heinrich Euler's work on Napoleon III. "Napoleon III, according to the historian Heinrich von Sybel, lived in silence and died in silence, and still today he is seen as mysterious figure. Posterity looks at him through the distorting mirror of the defeat at Sedan, and in his homeland, the last emperor is still considered as an outcast.

NAPOLEONIC NEWS
On the big screen
Last week we informed you of the mooted adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's Brigadier Gerard stories and this week we have more feature film news. The French Emperor will be back on the big screen in May this year with the release of Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, starring Ben Stiller and with Alain Chabat playing Napoleon.

On the internet
The records for 1808-2005 from Hansard, the official report of debates in the British Parliament, are now available online. The records can be searched by chamber, type of report and even individuals, and make for fascinating reading for those interested in what was being debated during the period.

Another excellent research tool, the archives from the French Ministère des Affaires étrangères, are also available online.

The Illyrian provinces
Having announced the bicentenary celebrations going on this year in Austria, Slovenia is also getting in on the act and preparing to mark the bicentenary of the creation of the Illyrian provinces. Slovenia's capital Ljubljana (known as Laybach, capital of the Illyrian provinces between 1809 and 1813) will play host to a number of exhibitions and conferences, details of which will be announced later. The Musée de l'Armée in Paris will also hold a study day on the Illyrian provinces in 2010.

Mozart: not for everyone
The French premiere of Cosi Fan Tutti, Mozart's celebrated opera buffa, took place on 1 February 1809. The response was, on the whole, positive:

"Whatever preconceptions one had of the opera's music beforehand, it surpassed the expectations of the audience. I have no fear in saying that never have such harmonious sounds been heard at the Opera Buffa.

7 February, 1859, L'année diplomatique
A special edition of the Moniteur appeared consisting of a single page bearing the Emperor's speech to the Legislative Session of 1859, detailing his international relations.

In his snapshot of French diplomacy, Napoleon III spoke of the excellent state of affairs with respect to Britain: "Regarding the alliance between France and England, I have put all my energy into consolidating it, and I have found, on the other side of the straits, a welcome reciprocity on the part of the Queen of Great Britain and her ministers.

Similarly, relations with Russia were on the up...
