EDITORIAL This week's letter is decidedly musical in tone: as well as an English translation of the lyrics of the popular Republican marching song, Chant du départ, in our Words and Music section, we also have another reminder of the next atelier, this time on music in daily life, and a concert review from 1809 in 200 years ago. We also have our new objet d'art of the month, which this time around is the exquisite "Premier Consul" dresscoat, and rounding things off, we have the top-ten library collections in Europe in our 150 years ago section. As normal, you will also find in our Magazine section on the right-hand side of the letter details of the main conferences, study-days, re-enactments and exhibitions going on at the moment and in the next few months.

OBJET D'ART OF THE MONTH "Premier Consul" dresscoat On his return to France, victorious after the battle of Marengo (14 June 1800), Bonaparte stopped over in Lyon on 28 and 29 June. Whilst there, the town council presented him with this "Premier Consul" dresscoat, made from plain, coral-red silk velvet, embroidered in silver and gold with olive-leaf motifs.

200 YEARS AGO Gig-going, 19th century-style The Moniteur Universel, dated Monday 27 February, 1809, announced a concert for the same evening organised by the gifted nineteen-year-old harpist, Casimir Baecker, the adopted son of the similarly expert harpist, Madame de Genlis. 150 YEARS AGO The libraries of Europe On 4 March 1859, the Moniteur Universel printed a brief summary (itself originally in the Edinburgh Review) of the main European libraries and the number of books that they held.
