THIS MONTH'S OBJECT
Bonaparte, First Consul, distributing honour sabres to the grenadiers of his guard after the Battle of Marengo, 14 June 1800
In response to commissions from Napoleon destined for the decoration of the imperial residences or as diplmomatic gifts, the Gobelins manufactory turned to reproducing the works of great artists (here Antoine Gros) in the pay of the regime, choosing to copy the paintings which best served imperial propaganda.

UNUSUAL INVALIDES
Les Invalides like you never seen it! Exhibition of photographs taken by Pascal Segrette, official photogapher for the Musée de l'Armée over the last ten years. These snapshots of the Hôtel national des Invalides give a fascinating picture of the building which Montesquieu once described as "the most worthy of respect on earth". Segrette also took advantage of the restoration of the stautue of Napoleon to close-up view of the emperor... An exhibition full of charm, free and open every day from 7-30am to 7pm. © Musée de l'Armée / P. Segrette

BOOKS FOR THE BEACH!
Why not get ready for the Bicentenary of Trafalgar, or dust off your French dictionaries and start reading the emperor's correspondance during the Egyptian campaign. You could alway 'go Pensinsular' and re-read Oman or discover the Portuguese empire in exile. Or as a last resort, you could always leave the real world behind and read a Napoleonic 'bodice-ripper'. Something for everyone this summer...

During the Second Empire, metal frame architecture was strongly encouraged. Indeed, Napoleon III commissioned many structures from the architect Victor Baltard, the bicentenary of whose birth falls on 19 June.
Here on napoleon.org we have files on two of his buildings, the church of Saint-Augustin in Paris (8th arrondissment, around the corner from the Fondation), and the Baltard Pavillon from Les Halles in Paris (here opposite) © Fondation Napoléon

Wishing you an excellent, Napoleonic, week!
