    A GOVERNOR IN PARIS
It is not every day that a governor of St Helena visits Paris. Next week, outgoing governor Mark Capes will be present at a series of events related to the epoch-making exhibition of furniture, furnishings and historical memorabilia from Napoleon's residences and time on the island of St Helena, 1815-1821, most of which have never been seen before here in Europe. The official programme, which provides a fitting climax to the project launched five years to restore Longwood House, includes a meeting at the French foreign ministry and the inauguration of the exhibition at the Hôtel des Invalides. This visit, along with the opening of the airport on St Helena and the instauration of a real Franco-British partnership on the island, inaugurates a renewed energy around the preservation of Napoleonic heritage and the encouragement of interest in the island. Governor Capes will conclude his time with us in a visit to the Emperor's birthplace, Ajaccio, Corsica, thereby bringing the Napoleonic epic full circle.
One hundred and ninety-four years ago, another (more infamous) governor of the island was mugged in a London street by one of Napoleon's entourage from Longwood, and three years later, that governor purportedly set upon that Frenchman in a dark alley in a suburb of Paris.
Time has moved on; and for the better!

Vive l'histoire et vive l'entente cordiale!

EXHIBITION > THE CORSICAN SEQUENCE: NAPOLEON AS SEEN BY ABEL GANCE
This exhibition focusses on film director Abel Gance's historic visit to Napoleon's birthplace, the town of Ajaccio in Corsica in 1925, for the shooting of the scenes of his epic film "Napoleon", representing a series of events (in 1793) which would determine Napoleon's future destiny. The exhibition (at the Maison Bonaparte, Ajaccio, Corsica, until 3 July 2016) presents the technical resources Gance had at his disposal and the situations with which he was confronted, his team actors, extras, his relations with the press and the political life of Ajaccio in 1925.

ARCHIVE FOOTAGE > In this 1980 interview (video, external link) film historian Kenneth Brownlow discusses his rediscovery of "Napoleon" by Abel Gance, and his life-time fascination with the work, of which he has made several restored versions.

1-2 APRIL 1810 > THE MARIAGE OF MARIE-LOUISE AND NAPOLEON I
Napoleon I married Marie-Louise de Habsburg-Lorraine at civil and religious ceremonies on 1 and 2 April, 1810. The union marked a striking volte-face of alliances both for France and Austria and inaugurated a brief period of Franco-Austrian peace. Despite backbiting (notably by Talleyrand who argued that this marriage "was just to satisfy [Napoleon's] vanity"), it nevertheless produced the one key thing: a son.

Have a look at our Close-up on the marriage of Napoleon I and Marie-Louise of Austria, including documents paintings, a timeline, a bibliography and comments.
