The walnut and gilded wood bookcases and walls were made by Jacob-Desmalter in 1808, as were the furniture and the large mechanical desk. The dado and the ceiling are by Dubois and Redouté. The centre point of the ceiling is marked by a painting by Girodet representing Minerva between Apollo and Mercury dated 1814. The decorative programme, designed by Girodet, is encylopedic and literary in spirit. A secret door, hidden behind false books, lead to the Empress's apartment.
