Artist and diplomat, Denon accompanied the expedition to Egypt in 1798. In 1802, he published the work Voyage dans la Basse et Haute Égypte pendant les campagnes du général Bonaparte (Voyage to Lower and Upper Egypt during the campaigns of General Bonaparte) which contributed greatly to the 'Return from Egypt' style long before the publication of the monumental Description de l'Egypte.
