After serving with distinction during the war against the Turks (1788-1790), in early 1796 he served under Archduke Charles in Germany, being towards the end of the year transferred to Alvinczy's staff in Italy. There he drafted the plan for the combat at Bassano, where the Austrians were defeated. In 1799, he served under Kray in Switzerland and Italy, joining Suvorov as a replacement for Suvorov's chief of staff, Chasteler. Promoted to Generalmajor in 1805, he was appointed chief of staff for the combined army at Austerlitz. Held entirely responsible for the allied defeat at Austerlitz (the allies were following his plans), he died of shame a few months after the battle.
