Battle of Wagram

This famous canvas, commissioned in 1835 by Louis-Philippe for his Musée historique de Versailles, was painted by Horace Vernet (1789-1863) and featured in the 1836 salon. It still hangs in the château, where it is part of the ‘Galerie des batailles’. In the painting, Napoleon is depicted on 6 July, 1809, at the Battle of Wagram, accompanied by the Duc d’Istrie (Jean-Baptiste Bessière, 1768-1813) who has been knocked down by an Austrian canonball.
