Following the French army's defeat at the Battle of Essling over 21 and 22 May, 1809, Napoleon I and his soldiers mounted an attack on the Austrians via the Lobau, crossing the Danube on the night of 4 July, 1809. This print depicts a scene from the Battle of Wagram in which Napoleon on horseback is issuing orders to his troops.
